TRAV 110: INTRODUCTION TO THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY

Prerequisite:

This course is an overview of the travel industry including: airlines, shipping lines, tour operators, wholesalers, charter operations, hotel representatives, car rental agencies, tourist offices, and travel agencies. Job related opportunities will be discussed. This course will also cover basic airline codes and terminology, reservation ethics and procedures, reservation records, buffer zones for tariff purposes, and travel insurance. Other "hospitality industry" issues will be included.

TRAV 116: TRAVEL DESTINATIONS (WESTERN HEMISPHERE)

3 hrs. (OC)

Prerequisite:

This course is a study of the travel destinations in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, etc. The location of major cities, airports, and air, land, and sea companies serving these areas is presented as well as tourist attractions, historical monuments, works of art, unique land formations, and how tour companies operate in these areas.

TRAV 117: TRAVEL DESTINATIONS (EASTERN HEMISPHERE)

Prerequisite:

This course is a study of the travel destinations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Orient, etc. The location of major cities, airports, and air, land, and sea companies serving these areas is discussed. Also included is the location of important tourist attractions, historical monuments, works of art, unique land formations, and how tour companies operate in these areas.

TRAV 120: TRAVEL MANAGEMENT, MARKETING AND SALES

3 hrs. (OC)

Prerequisite:

This course covers essential information concerning organizing and operating a travel-related business. Organizational topics include: managing an electronic accounting system (records, sales, commissions, productivity); processing documents; preparing reports; determining profits and loss; and planning for the future. Operational topics include: office practices; sales techniques; client-need analysis; advertising strategies, and managerial techniques used to encourage optimum functioning of an agency.

TRAV 200: INTERNET FOR TRAVEL

3 hrs. (OC)

Prerequisite: TRAV 110 and 116

This course will focus on electronic research and the making of reservations. This is to include both domestic and international information. The course includes the study of Internet sites for the public and sites for travel personnel only.

TRAV 210: TRAVEL AND HOSPITALITY LAW

3 hrs. (OC)

Prerequisite: TRAV 110

This course focuses on the basic legal concepts and theories of both travel/hospitality law and contract/tort (negligence) law and their impact on the travel/hospitality industry. Emphasis is also on the study of new international and federal regulatory rules concerning travel security and safety. Areas of potential legal concern are identified along with strategies concerning their avoidance. Legal rights and responsibilities of travel industry practitioners, as well as those of the traveling public, are discussed.

TRAV 230: TRAVEL INDUSTRY RESERVATIONS

3 hrs. (OC)

Prerequisite: TRAV 110 and 116

This course focuses on the fundamentals of researching, planning, recommending, and making reservations for domestic and international travel. The course material is to include air flight simulation, hotel/motel accommodations, car rentals, rail travel, cruises, and tours. Students will learn to use the standard reference materials and booking engines needed to apply these reference techniques.

TRAV 260: TRAVEL INTERNSHIP

3 hrs. (OC)

Prerequisite: Admission to the Travel program and completion of a minimum of twelve semester hours of travel or travel-related courses

This course involves student trainees who are employed at an approved training station with a program of training scheduled by joint agreement of the student, supervisor, and program coordinator. Special assignments including extensive travel projects and/or supplementary reports and supervisory direction and evaluation are required.
