ICC's Engineering Program
Engineering at ICC is a transfer program leading to the Associate in Engineering Science degree. Because employment as an engineer requires a bachelor's degree in one of the many engineering disciplines , the program prepares you to transfer to a university at the junior level to continue their studies. Which university and which engineering discipline depend on your interests and abilities. Requirements for the Associate in Engineering Science degree are as flexible as possible to allow you to choose courses at ICC that simultaneously meet the degree requirements of your transfer university. The standards of ABET accreditation ( ?? American Board of Engineering & Technology) make this possible.
Engineering studies begin with a series of courses in mathematics and laboratory science. The heart of the curriclum—the engineering sciences—builds on this foundation. When these skills are well-developed, the curriclum culminates in a few courses in engineering design. These, usually taken during your senior year, introduce you to the creative nature of the engineering profession. Concurrent with these, general education courses add other important skills, serve to round out your education, and introduce you to the wider context within which engineers work. General education requirements typically include the social sciences, humanities, arts, and communication courses.
Beyond the basic degree requirements, you have choices to make. General education electives should be chosen with an eye on the requirements of your transfer university. The same is true of the technical electives, but these also depend on which engineering discipline you choose. If you are like most freshmen, however, you are uncertain about both which discipline and which university.
