Emerging Technologies SPRING 2009 Invitation & Registration Form

You are invited to attend "Course Content in Alternative Modes: Online Workshop on Emerging Technology Tools" presented through the Illinois Community College Faculty Association Teaching & Learning Workshops and Illinois Central College.

  • Workshop Description: This online workshop will provide opportunities for community college faculty to improve teaching and
    learning processes by experiencing, understanding and employing new technologies to design and deliver course content in alternative ways, including but not limited to Google, audio, blogs, social networking, and web conferencing. This workshop will be delivered in a hybrid format through asynchronous (web pages and discussion forum) and synchronous (virtual classroom - voice and text chat). Participants will work through a series of web pages and other materials at their own pace to learn about that week’s technologies. All participants will meet in a virtual classroom with the workshop facilitator to learn and discuss more about
    the week’s technologies. All participants will have the option of creating a portfolio page of projects
    produced during the workshop.

  • Program Format & Length: This online workshop will begin on Monday, March 23, 2009. This is a 3 week workshop with a couple online modules for each week. You can work at your own pace through the materials in each module. There will be three synchronous sessions from 1:30 to 2:30 pm on Wednesdays, March 25, April 1 and April 8. The workshop facilitator will be originating from Illinois Central College’s East Peoria Campus.  We will be using a virtual classroom for the three synchronous sessions on Wednesdays. Only online participation is required for this workshop. However, faculty who wish to travel to Illinois Central College in East Peoria( Teaching and Learning Center, 240 A ) on the days of Open Lab sessions are more than welcome to come. These open lab sessions are optional. The purpose of the open lab sessions to provide one-on-one in-person assistance for anyone struggling with using the workshop website or any of the emerging technologies introduced during the workshop.

    However, travel and in-person participation will not be required, you'll be able to participate in the "Live" session via the interent. Information and instructions for accessing the virtual classroom will be provided when the workshop begins on Monday, March 23.

  • Target Audience: Registration is open to any Illinois community college faculty member interested in experiences to promote excellence in teaching and learning. College Administrators and support staff that have interest in technologies for supporting instruction and creation/development of instructional materials are also encouraged to participate in this workshop. Individuals that have basic experience working with Microsoft Windows applications and are comfortable using the internet will have the prerequisite skills to gain meaningful experiences from this workshop.

    You'll find all ranges of computer and technical experience in this workshop. Regardless of whether you're an expert on emerging technologies or just getting started; the purpose of the workshop is to review emerging technologies and their relationship to education. If you're experienced with the technology, you're encouraged to share you're experiences and insight with the technology and any instructional examples you've created. If you're new to using the technology, the goal is that you learn about the technology and how it might or might not be useful as an instructional tool for your course or subject.

  • Location & Equipment: The workshop will be presented online. The three synchronous sessions will be held online using a virtual classroom. Faculty may participate at any location using an internet connection. Speakers and a microphone would be beneficial for the virtual classroom session but not required. Speakers will be required for some of the media found in the workshop website. Travel and in-person participation are NOT required to participate in this workshop.
  • Presenters: Brandy Thatcher, Instructional Media Developer from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Illinois.
    Patrice Hess, Director of Organizational Learning and Douglas R. Peterson, Faculty, Business and Information Systems have provided additional consultation and expertise for course content. Many other professors/ faculty have provided additional examples, support and advice about the technologies.

  • Cost: This workshop is FREE for all Illinois College Faculty, Support Staff and Administration thanks to a grant provided by Illinois Community College Faculty Association.
