You are invited to attend "Course Content in Alternative Modes: Online Workshop on Emerging Technology Tools" presented by the Teaching and Learning Center at Illinois Central College.

  • Workshop Description: This online workshop will provide opportunities for community college faculty to improve teaching and
    learning processes by experiencing, understanding and employing new technologies to design and deliver course content in alternative ways. This workshop will be delivered in a hybrid format through asynchronous (web pages and discussion forum) and synchronous (virtual classroom) formats. Participants will work through a series of web pages and other materials at their own pace to learn about that week’s technologies.

  • Program Format & Length: This online workshop will begin on Monday, July 13, 2009. This is a 3 week workshop.
    Each week will highlight a topic or specific technology. The worksop will be conducted in a social network website.
    This is a private website and you'll be invited by email after you register.
    Three synchronous sessions held in wiziq virtual classroom - 1:30 to 2:30 pm on Wednesdays.
    Information and instructions for accessing the virtual classroom will be provided when the workshop begins.
    The workshop facilitator will be originating from Illinois Central College’s East Peoria Campus.  Only online participation is required. However, two open lab sessions for assistance will be offered during the workshop, faculty who wish to travel to Illinois Central College in East Peoria (Teaching and Learning Center, 240 A ) for the open lab sessions are welcome. Open lab sessions are optional.

  • Target Audience: Registration is open to any Illinois community college faculty member interested in experiences to promote excellence in teaching and learning. College Administrators and support staff that have interest in technologies for supporting instruction and creation/development of instructional materials are also encouraged to participate in this workshop. Individuals that have basic experience working with Microsoft Windows applications and are comfortable using the internet will have the prerequisite skills to gain meaningful experiences from this workshop.

    You'll find all ranges of computer and technical experience in this workshop. Regardless of whether you're an expert on emerging technologies or just getting started; the purpose of the workshop is to review emerging technologies and their relationship to education. If you're experienced with the technology, you're encouraged to share you're experiences and insight with the technology and any instructional examples you've created. If you're new to using the technology, the goal is that you learn about the technology and how it might or might not be useful as an instructional tool for your course or subject.

  • Location & Equipment: The workshop will be presented online. The three synchronous sessions will be held online using a virtual classroom. Faculty may participate at any location using an internet connection. Speakers are required for the virtual classroom sessions. A microphone would be beneficial for the virtual classroom session but is not required. Speakers will be required for some of the media found in the workshop materials.

  • Presenters: Brandy Thatcher, Instructional Media Developer from Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Illinois.
    Patrice Hess, Director of Organizational Learning and Douglas R. Peterson, Faculty, Business and Information Systems have provided additional consultation and expertise for course content. Many other professors/ faculty have provided additional examples, support and advice about the technologies.

  • Cost: This workshop is FREE. The workshop was developed with support from a grant provided by Illinois Community College Faculty Association and Illinois Central College.

  • CEU's: CEU's are not officially issued for this workshop.
    • The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized standard unit of measurement for participation in a continuing education (CE) activity that is not offered for academic credit.
    • 1 hour of training equals .1 CEU.
    • A certificate of workshop completion will be emailed (and sent via snail mail (by request)) for anyone that attends all three virtual sessions, posts at least twice a week to the discussion board and/ or their blog space in the network.
    • To successfully complete the workshop, the participant should've spent:
      • 7 hours of training (reviewing the materials provided on the workshop webpages (or modules), attempting the suggested homework tasks, and posting to the discussion board and their blog
      • 3 hours of training (attending three - 1 hour virtual classroom sessions)
