The Practical Nursing program at Illinois Central College is designed to prepare the nursing graduate to give nursing care to clients at the bedside under the direction of a registered nurse, licensed physician, podiatrist or dentist. The program consists of two semesters and one summer session.
The program includes four nursing courses and specified general education and science courses. The nursing courses build and expand on the art and science of nursing available to individuals and groups of all ages, emphasizing prevention, maintenance and rehabilitation concepts. Learning will involve didactic instruction, audiovisual materials, computer assignments, periodical readings, skills lab, group discussion and clinical experience. The clinical experience will be at nursing homes, hospitals and other community health agencies in the Peoria area.
Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will receive a Certificate in Practical Nursing. The graduate will be eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) for licensed practical nurses and apply for licensure as a practical nurse.
The Practical Nursing Program is approved by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
