The medical assistant usually works in a physician's office, but the training is so varied that job opportunities are available in a variety of hospital departments, in pharmacies, insurance companies, long-term care or other allied or specialized health care facilities. The program develops such necessary skills as arranging patient appointments, meeting the public in person and by telephone, handling money, basic bookkeeping, ordering equipment and supplies, completing medical forms. An introduction is also given to aseptic techniques, assisting the doctor with exams and treatments, basic laboratory and other diagnostic tests. Coursework is taken on the Illinois Central College campus, and practical experiences are provided in the offices of cooperating physicians.
