Entrance into Biology 205 is dependent upon successful completion of the Anatomy and Physiology placement test (or successful completion of both CHEM 115 or higher and BIOL 111 or BIOL 160). Study information is available.
Other placement tests are available but not required for individuals with background knowledge in Spanish, Music Theory and Engineering. For information call the Testing Center at (309) 694-5234.
Academic placement testing in reading and math are required of all full time students. However, if you have an ACT Reading subscore of 18 or higher, you will only need to take the math test.
Illinois Central College uses a computer-adaptive testing system from American College Testing (ACT) called COMPASS which includes two tests: math and reading. The testing is used as a guide for placement in the appropriate level of class and is not pass/fail, but a tool to assure your educational success. As this test is adaptive, each student receives a different number of items. After you respond to each item, COMPASS then selects another item for you of appropriate difficulty. COMPASS is designed for individuals with little or no computer experience.
- The test session will last approximately 2 hours. The average time for each individual test is 45 minutes
- This test is untimed. You are encouraged to take as much time as you need
- Photo ID is required to take the test
- There is no charge for placement testing
- Reservations are required
- Students may bring their own calculators but there are some restrictions. Be sure your calculator isn't prohibited.
- If you require reasonable accommodations for testing, please contact Access Services at (309) 694-5749 to discuss the documentation you will need to submit.
- Results are available a few minutes after completing the test
- Reading results are valid for 5 years
- Mathematics results are valid for 3 years
You can take each of the tests over one time. You may consider retesting if you have taken the test once, time has elapsed and you have studied or gained more information, and you strongly feel that your scores could improve
