Helping Students Learn From Ethical Failures (Webinar)

Helping Students Learn From Ethical Failures
Featured Higher Education Presenter: Tricia Bertram Gallant, Ph.D.
Wednesday, December 9
12noon-1:30 PM -- Light snacks and beverages will be served.
East Peoria Campus, L422
REGISTER: tlc@icc.edu or 694-8908
This session has 13 open seats, reserved on a first-come basis.
Students cheat. Even before leaving high school, more than half have cheated on tests, and more than a third have plagiarized. (And those are the ones who admit it.) These days, it’s almost too easy to cheat. Stiff competition for admissions and the imperative of high grades give students powerful motive; the Internet provides ubiquitous opportunity.
We’re never going to eliminate cheating. But we can create programs that educate students about honesty and character, reduce the incidence of cheating and turn ethical lapses into opportunities for growth and learning.
That’s the focus of a brand-new online seminar coming December 9. If you’re concerned about academic integrity, and committed to championing it on your campus, you’ll want to circle the date.
In Helping Students Learn from Ethical Failures, Dr. Tricia Bertram Gallant will explain how to move institutional attitudes about cheating past despair and paralysis to enthusiastic support for change. During this 90-minute audio seminar, you’ll learn about:
• The student mindset that cheating is “necessary.”
• How cheating is spreading and democratizing.
• How to conduct a self-assessment of ethical learning opportunities on your campus.
• How to analyze your institution’s approach to student cheating.
• How to overcome resistance to providing values/ethics education.
• How to lead a campus-wide integrity movement.
• How to build a coalition of stakeholders with an interest in enhancing academic integrity.
• How to leverage cheating incidents to stimulate prioritization of ethics and integrity.
• And much more.
A noted author and speaker, Dr. Bertram Gallant is Academic Integrity Coordinator at the University of California San Diego, and Chair of the Center for Academic Integrity Advisory Council. She has extensive experience developing integrity policies and procedures. Dr. Bertram Gallant’s latest books include Academic Integrity in the Twenty-First Century: A Teaching and Learning Imperative (Jossey-Bass) and her co-authored Cheating in School: What We Know and
What We Can Do (Wiley-Blackwell).
