CHIP Tip No. 49: Revitalize with Yoga
Yoga is safe, easy and relaxing!
We are all aware of how a healthy, well-balanced diet nurtures our body and provides us with myriad benefits, but too often, we neglect to acknowledge the physical effects that stress can create when we fail to nurture our mind and take time for ourselves. Stress can manifest itself as muscle tension, headaches, increased blood pressure, exhaustion, irritability and many other negative health effects. One of the reasons why daily physical activity is so effective at reducing stress is because it increases production of natural “feel good hormones”. Studies conducted at Duke University School of Medicine and Brooklyn College, City University of New York, found that yoga improves mood as effectively as aerobic exercise. Yoga has also been identified as being an effective measure in reducing stress in coronary patients. Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles has even launched a yoga cardiac program, which has become extremely popular. Dr. Dean Ornish, University of California researcher, author and founder of the Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease, considers regular practice of yoga an essential component of his program and an effective way to reduce stress.
The focus of yoga exercise is on the health of the spine, breathing exercises, and relaxation. There are many different styles of yoga that are suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Benefits of Yoga:
- Balance and Flexibility: Gentle movements can increase flexibility while improving balance. Good balance and flexibility can keep you from falling as well as prevent injuries.
- Breathing: Did you know that most of us only use a fraction of our lungs’ capacity when we breathe? Breathing exercises will help you learn how to use more of your lungs’ capacity; therefore, increasing our bodies ability to deliver oxygen rich blood which can help ease tension in tight muscles and increase mental clarity.
- Relaxation: By allowing your body and mind to relax, you are giving yourself an opportunity to naturally recharge.
