SCOTTBORO, ALA. — Illinois Central College shaved two strokes off its first-round total in Wednesday’s second round of the NJCAA Division II national golf tournament.

Nate Deakin birdied the last hole at Goose Pond Colony for a 3-over-par 75 to lead ICC. He’s tied for 60th place at 8-over 152.

“The greens are getting faster and faster as the week goes on,” Cougars coach Ron Marshall said. “We’re getting a little more confidence.”

South Mountain shot 283, 11 better than the Arizona school’s first round, and leads the 17-team event at 1-under 575. John A. Logan (284) is in second, five back.

ICC shot 307 and is in 14th place, 41 strokes off the pace. Ryan Brown shot 79 and is T-70 at 154. Sam Lee also shot 79 and is a stroke back.

Rend Lake’s David Griffin (70) leads the event at 8-under 136. Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Corey Ward (71) trails by three shots.
