SCOTTSBORO, ALA. — The Illinois Central College had a rough opening day Tuesday in the 2009 NJCAA Div. II Men’s Golf Championship at Goose Pond Colony.

ICC checked in at 13th with a 21-over-par 309 team effort, 19 shots off the lead.

“We didn’t play too bad, but we didn’t play real well,” ICC coach Ron Marshall said. “We need to improve five or six strokes to get back into contention.”

Ryan Brown’s 3-over 75, for 34th among individuals, was ICC’s best effort on the windy day.

He was followed by teammates Sam Lee (76), Nate Deakin (77), Kyle McGee (81) and Cole Garrison (84).

David Griffin, of Rend Lake (Ill.) College fired a 6-under 66 to lead all individuals. Darton (Ga.) College leads all teams at 290.
