GODFREY — Timely hitting and solid pitching helped the Illinois Central College women's softball team open its season Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Lewis & Clark.

The Cougars, ranked 17th in NJCAA Division II, limited the hosts to just three hits on the day in 10-0 and 6-0 shutouts.

Sophomore clean-up hitter Dana Garber, from Metamora, paced the ICC offense with a 6-for-7, three-RBI day.

"She stepped up to that role," ICC coach Heather Doty said of Garber taking over the No. 4 slot in the offense.

Garber was 3-for-3 with two RBI in the five-inning, 10-run rule first game.

Dee-Mack graduate Taylor Preuitt fired a two-hitter and added a triple with two RBIs at the plate in the opener. Beth Ann Swartz tossed a one-hitter in Game 2. East Peoria graduate Kaleigh Tapp also tripled and drove in three runs and ICC broke open Game 1 with a seven-run fourth.

"The plan for today was to take advantage of opportunities and we did," said Doty.
