EAST PEORIA — The fourth-seeded Illinois Central College women’s basketball team opens Region XXIV play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lorene Ramsey Gymnasium in East Peoria. The Cougars (24-6) will play No. 5-seed John Wood (21-9) for the second time this season. ICC, riding a six-game win streak, is looking to win the region tournament and advance to the NJCAA Division II national tournament for the fourth time in five years. Here are some of the regular season highlights:

The margin of victory for ICC over John Wood (97-78) in the teams’ first meeting Nov. 22. However, the Trail Blazers have won five straight and clamped down on defense, allowing just 36.4 points per game during that span.

“What’s most important is us playing ICC basketball; knowing what we have to do better and knowing what we can do,” ICC coach Steve Garber said. “As a team, we’re playing very good. But we have some individuals, I think, that can still improve.”

0-3: ICC’s record against the top three seeds of the region. The Cougars dropped a three-point decision to top-seed Lewis & Clark, No. 2 Parkland won by eight, and third-seed Lake Land beat ICC by 20.

“We have our work cut out for us,” Garber said. “We have a tradition here. We know what to uphold, and we’re going in fighting every game. It’s a tough road to hoe.”

25.2: Combined scoring average for ICC’s four players listed at 5-foot-10 or taller. The quartet of post players (Kathleen Donohon, Shandi Martin, Brittany Trammell and Courtney Williams) will be relied on heavily to complement the guards, who combine for 62.1 ppg.

“I think there’s a little bit of improvement that can be made in (the post) area,” Garber said. “And we definitely need that going into the tournament as far as solidifying some inside presence.
