EAST PEORIA — Illinois Central College women’s basketball coach Steve Garber has been putting his team through extra paces lately.

“We’ve been having morning practices in addition to our afternoon stuff,” Garber said. “We even had practice (Wednesday) morning.

The focus of all those practices has been defense and on Wednesday night the Cougars flexed their defensive muscle as they defeated Lincoln College, 72-34.

“We’ve really been focusing on our defense,” Garber said. “Because in the postseason, when it comes down to nuts-and-bolts time, that’s what’s going to wn us games.

“I think the kids are starting to believe in it.”

Indeed, the Cougars forced Lincoln into 36 turnovers. By the 10-minute mark of the first half, Lincoln had just three baskets compared to 12 turnovers.

Even worse for the Lynx (6-19)was the nearly five-minute scoreless stretch in which ICC responded with a 9-point run that included baskets by Sara Hamilton, Courtney Williams and Taylor Welch.

“We just didn’t attack it well,” Lincoln coach Carol Wilson said. “They made us do some things that we weren’t comfortable with and when they went to that 2-3 zone trap late in the first half, it really made things tough.”

Garber agreed.

“The kids like playing it because it’s creates havoc,” Garber said. “Its goal is to create chaos.”

Kathleen Donoho scored 13 to lead ICC (20-6), while Taylor Welch and Sydney Stahlberg each added 11.

AROUND THE RIM: The Cougars will host their final home game on Sunday, which will promote breast-cancer awareness. All gate proceeds, concession proceeds and50-50 proceeds will be donated to the WBCA Kay Yow Fund.
