EAST PEORIA — The Illinois Central College men’s basketball team needed to turn up the heat defensively Wednesday night.

When the Cougars did, they hit their stride and rallied for a 77-71 victory over John Wood at Lorene Ramsey Gymnasium.

ICC (18-6, 8-2) trailed by 13 (28-15) with 8 minutes to play in the first half, but forced three turnovers, connected on a 3-pointer and tore off a 17-3 push to grab a 32-31 lead.

“We had to pick it up defensively and, ultimately, speeding up the game helped us out,” ICC coach Tony Wysinger said.

ICC’s intensity carried over to the second half, when the Couargs started attacking the basket successfully. ICC shot 58 percent after intermission.

The Cougars struggled in the first half, making just 3 of 12 attempts from 3-point distance.

“In the second half we made a concerted effort to try and get to the basket,” Wysinger said. “We started getting some layups and some jumpers.”

Jimmy Kuban led ICC with 19 points, Breland McKnight scored 12 and Dorel Sutherland had 10, drawing praise from Wysinger.

“(Sutherland’s) game down the stretch really helped us out,” he said.
