No. 6-ranked Cougars beat No. 5 Sandburg

In an early meeting between teams that met at the NJCAA Division II national tournament last March, the No. 6-ranked Illinois Central College women's basketball team beat No. 5 Carl Sandburg 70-59 on Tuesday.

Freshman Kathleen Donoho, from Mahomet-Seymour High, led the Cougars with 17 points.

Freshman Sara Hamilton, from Washington, and classmate Haley Jones, from Knoxville, added 12 points each.

ICC trailed 35-34 at halftime.

"We pulled it out in the last six minutes," said ICC coach Steve Garber, whose squad beat Sandburg 47-43 in the 2007 national tournament at East Peoria.

The Cougars went on to place third in the tournament.

This time, ICC made 12 of 26 from the field. Carl Sandburg was 18 of 23.

The Cougars took advantage of 12 of 17 free throw shooting, while Carl Sandburg was 4 of 7.

Sandburg struggled from 3-point range, making only 3 of 15 attempts. ICC was 2-for-9 on treys.

The victory raised ICC's record to 6-1.

Sandburg dropped to 3-2.
