A resume is a summary of your accomplishments as an artist. Within your resume you list basic information such as your contact information, education and background experiences related to art. More in-depth accomplishments can be included such as: workshops attended/conducted, exhibitions you have been in such as one person shows and group and juried shows, awards, honorariums, any important commissions, collections, and any related publications. Depending upon what the resume is being used for, it can be anywhere from one page to over 10 pages. Art resumes are different that basic job resumes. An art resume will be geared towards your career as an artist and a job resume will be used to apply for jobs. Your art resume works in conjunction with your portfolio packet.

Resume Format

Heading Contact information which includes: your name, address, phone number, email address, personal web site address. Make sure your email address is a professional address. Do not use an email address like startrektrekkie or blingbling185. Your resume is a professional extension of you so make sure your email address is professional, or at least respectable.

If you are putting your resume on a web page, consider whether or not you want everyone online to know your home address and phone number. Usually you can leave out the exact details to where you live. If someone is serious about your work, they can contact you through email.

Only college, not high school unless it was a private arts school; list most recent education first

Work experience related to art
Unless you are applying for a job in the art field, this is not a big importance, so you don’t need to go into major detail. If you are applying for a job in the art world, include all relevant art experiences, but don’t go overboard. Jobs that were minor and not related to the field of art may be omitted

Include location and date and curator if they are well known – most recent exhibition first

Group and Juried exhibitions

Major commissions, not something you did for a friend of your mother's – most recent commission first

Gallery representation
Galleries that display your work on a permanent basis are galleries that represent you. A gallery that you have exhibited your work at once or twice is not considered a gallery that represents you. If a patron knows that they can find you through a certain gallery at any given time, that gallery represents you. Make sure that you clarify your status with a gallery before you list them as representing you
