Testing

Placement Testing

Academic placement testing is required of all full time students. Tranfer and part-time students are evaluated on an individual basis to determine testing needs.

About COMPASS
Illinois Central College uses a computer-adaptive testing system from American College Testing (ACT) called COMPASS which includes two test: math and reading. The testing is used as a guide for placement in the appropriate level of class and is not pass/fail, but a tool to assure your educational success. As this test is adaptive, each student receives a different number of items. After you respond to each item, COMPASS then selects another item for you of appropriate difficulty. COMPASS is designed for individuals with little or no computer experience.

  • The test session will last approximately 2 hours. The average time for each individual test is 45 minutes
  • This test is untimed. You are encouraged to take as much time as you need
  • Scratch paper and calculators are provided for you
  • Photo ID is required to take the test
  • There is no charge for placement testing
  • Reservations are required
  • Results are available a few minutes after completing the test
  • A study guide is available with a few sample questions from each subject area or online at www.act.org/compass/sample/.
  • Students may use their English ACT score for placement in ICC's English courses - call (309) 694-5234 for more information

Retest Policy
You can take each of the tests over one time. Reasons for Retest:

  • If it has been three or more years since you tested - scores are only valid for three years
  • If you have taken the test once, time has elapsed and you have studied or gained more information, and you strongly feel that your scores could improve
  • If it is required to test into the next Reading level.
